5 dozen cookies

2 cups lard (shortening or butter may be substituted)

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1 1/2 tablespoons anise

6 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

3 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons vanilla

1/4 cup warm water as needed (can be half wine)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix lard and sugar. Add eggs and anise. Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Combine ingredients. Dough will be sticky, but do not add flour. Flour rolling pin. Roll out on a floured pastry board to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Form by hand or cut out with cookie cutter. Sprinkle or dip cut- out cookies in sugar/cinnamon mixture. Bake 10 to 12 minutes.
